...I'm sorry. I didn't help your situation, did I?

Maybe a good place to start would be asking him out on a date, or at the very least, to spend some time alone with you.
Why don't you ask him to swim with you?
[Assuming he's... not already a swimmer?]
no subject
we do that every day. it's not really that special.

I know some people don't like extravagance when going out on a date, but have you asked him about this? Maybe it would be best to start with what he likes to do in his spare time and extrapolate from that.

If someone I had feelings went to such lengths for a date, I won't feel like it was too much! In fact, I would feel happy that they considered the time we spent together special enough to be worthy of that much effort!
[That's you being a romantic, Gau.]
But there's nothing wrong with the low level things either as long as you make sure that you do show that you care!! As I said before, just spending time with the person you care about can be enough. It may sound difficult, but if you put aside your worry about how you look, what would you like to do with him, Rin-san? Maybe starting from there instead of trying to think of what he would want would be better.
I'm glad that you trust me enough to confide in me like this. It actually makes me very happy.
[He's not lying either- he's smiling, despite everything, because he can actually be the one to help his friend.]

[he's never had a conversation about this kind of thing, with anyone. he wants his first one to go well]
we're friends. and you understand. of course i trust you.

i want to do something special with him. something active maybe. and he likes my cooking even though it's nothing special.

He is glad Rin trusts him- he said as much, after all- but the confirmation back, along with "we're friends" after such a long pause (probably Rin debating what to say, as Gau couldn't imagine Rin to be the type to ignore texts due to a lack of caring), sends a guilty twinge throughout his heart.
It's times like these that serve as a bitter reminder that Gau does have something to feel guilty about that he didn't back home.]
If he likes it, then it is special!
Something active... That could be something like a hike, if there were any hills here!!
[For once, he feels the bicyclists' pain.
GOTTA THINK...]
It may be out of season, but do you like ice skating?

he's not that coordinated with his feet.

Something active that doesn't require his feet, then...
...That really only leaves swimming, doesn't it.

...How did you picture this conversation going?

[Rin you're actually late to the party]

[As a friend, he's pretty good looking. That'd warrant some love letters in lockers, right??]
...Rin-san just when did you expect this to come up?

honey you got a big storm coming when your face gets on tv]
But then you would be balancing a professional career and figuring this out. Maybe it's better you're experiencing this now!

it's not like anyone can choose when stuff like this happens, so maybe it's stupid to bring up.
