Maybe a good place to start would be asking him out on a date, or at the very least, to spend some time alone with you.

It isn't stupid!! I'm glad you're getting through your feelings on this!

I know some people don't like extravagance when going out on a date, but have you asked him about this? Maybe it would be best to start with what he likes to do in his spare time and extrapolate from that.

i'm not stupid. i know what a date is. i just don't know the level of effort i should be putting in. if nothing's supposed to change, it would be a pretty low level, right? something like sharing a burger or hanging out playing video games. but those things aren't special at all, he'll think i don't care or am a total failure at this stuff. but if i put too much effort in, like make a full homecooked meal for him or take him out for a picnic and a bike ride and stargazing or something, he'll think i'm trying too hard or i'm not being casual enough and it'll be embarrassing

Rin-san, I think you're being too critical of yourself! [What else is new.]

If someone I had feelings went to such lengths for a date, I won't feel like it was too much! In fact, I would feel happy that they considered the time we spent together special enough to be worthy of that much effort!

But there's nothing wrong with the low level things either as long as you make sure that you do show that you care!! As I said before, just spending time with the person you care about can be enough. It may sound difficult, but if you put aside your worry about how you look, what would you like to do with him, Rin-san? Maybe starting from there instead of trying to think of what he would want would be better.

I'm glad that you trust me enough to confide in me like this. It actually makes me very happy.

[it takes him a somewhat long time to reply; it's not that he's forgotten about the text, or gotten too embarrassed or frustrated. he just realises that he wants to send the right message back -- he wants to really take what Gau says to heart, and let him know that he's going to try and do that]

It's times like these that serve as a bitter reminder that Gau does have something to feel guilty about that he didn't back home.]

yeah, it's alright. i like surfing more, but there's no ocean here. it would have been nice to go to the beach together.

not the conversation. i just mean, you know. i always figured this kind of stuff would come up later, in general. not in highschool.
